Social Dancing Etiquette Checklist
Before you go
1. Review the moves you learned from the classes you took last time. Dancing requires both physical and mental effort, so even reviewing in your head will help you a lot!
2. Invite friends and classmates to join you. Your friend might hesitate to go alone and may need a little encouragement.
3. Make sure you are clean and smell good. Your dance partners will be much closer to you than at normal social gatherings. Shower, brush your teeth, groom yourself properly, and check your nose hair and eyebrows.
4. Wear appropriate dance attire. Don't be too casual, pick comfortable shoes, and bring an extra shirt in the car if you are attending a big event or sweat a lot. For women, make sure that everything is covered when you move.
5. Meditate to bachata music to create positive energy, and be ready to feel the music on the dance floor!
On the Dance Floor
1. Please be mindful of people who are already dancing with their partners. Please wait until the song finishes before talking to them. Let's ensure everyone has a great time on the dance floor.
2. Always ask to dance politely. Do not grab anyone and drag them onto the dance floor. Just ask, "Would you like to dance?" with a smile.
3. It is alright to say no, but do so in a gentle and positive manner. Don't be disappointed, or take it personally if someone declines. It's normal. We dance a lot and need to take breaks in-between. If someone repeatedly declines, re-examine your technique. Make sure your followers/leads feel comfortable dancing with you.
4. Do not touch anyone inappropriately. Sensual bachata involves dancing very closely with a partner. But remember, you are dancing with someone's boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife. Don't touch or dance in a way that you wouldn't want your partner to see.
5. We want to build a joyful and supportive community on the dance floor. After dancing with someone, take the time to introduce yourself and smile. It's a great way to make new friends and enjoy more dancing!
